Happy but not Satisfied

It’s been almost 8 weeks since the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China. I remember getting out of the competition pool at the end of my 200m Freestyle final and thinking to myself: “Bummer”. When I think of my accomplishments 8 weeks later I think: “Perfect. I’m right on track”.

I finished the 200m Freestyle event in 7th place. Why did I even think of the word “bummer” when I got out of the pool? Simple: I was not satisfied. I think it is that eagerness and the feeling of knowing one can do better that drives athletes. I think it’s important though to sometimes take a few steps back and pat oneself on the back for what one has achieved. It’s ok to be eager and always want more, but it’s also vital to be grateful and not take things for granted.

I was 9th in the world at the 2009 World Championships. I still remember how disappointed I was when I missed making the final by only a few tenths of a second. That said I am super grateful that I was given the opportunity to take part in my first World Championship final 8 weeks ago and was able to swim faster in every round, from heats to semi-finals, and lastly to the finals. That said, I’m right on track for the 2012 Olympic Games.
